How to Turn Business Vision into Execution: The Flight 1549 Lesson on Resilience

A flight plan doesn’t guarantee smooth skies. It guarantees you know where you’re going, why you’re going there, and how to recalibrate when conditions change.

Vision without a flight plan is just a destination with no route. Values without a flight plan are just words on a wall. My RES (Resilience Execution System) is what turns both into executable reality — especially when turbulence hits.

And without a flight plan, vision is just a wish with good intentions.

I learned this the hard way on January 15, 2009.

Flight 1549 had a destination. It had a route. It had a plan. And when both engines went out at 3,000 feet, the people who performed weren’t the ones who panicked when the plan broke. They were the ones who knew the plan well enough to adapt it in real time.

That’s the difference between vision and execution.

My friend and colleague Chad Jenkins introduced me to the VCR framework. Vision. Capability. Reach. It changed how I think about growth and performance.

But Vision without execution architecture is just a destination with no route.

That’s why I built RES. The Resilience Execution System. The flight plan for your vision and values.

Here’s how it works.

Clarity of Vision. You have to know where you’re going before you file the flight plan. Not a vague direction. A specific destination.

Articulated and Ingrained Values. These are your navigational principles. When conditions change — and they will — your values tell you how to recalibrate without losing altitude.

Weekly Plan. The route. What needs to happen this week to move the vision forward? Not everything. The right things.

Daily Big 3 Outcomes. Every day, three outcomes. Each one tied to a purpose. Each one attacked with massive action. Not a to-do list. A commitment.

Daily Big 3 People. Every day, three people to connect with — each one tied to one of your Big 6 active projects. This is not networking. This is intentional relationship architecture (My A to I = Affinity framework). Every connection is a potential wormhole between where you are and where you need to be.

Daily Big Gain. At the end of every day — what did you win? What did you learn? Both count. Neither gets skipped.

Leverage. One question every day. Who can I hand something to right now to free up my capacity for what only I can do?

Weekly Capture. Six areas. Financial. Relationship. Personal Development. Business. Fun and Recreation. Health. Every idea, every insight, every opportunity — captured for later execution. Nothing lost. Everything available.

This is not a productivity system.

This is a flight plan.

Vision tells you the destination. Values keep you on course. RES gets you there — day by day, decision by decision, connection by connection.

Chad Jenkins gave me the framework for thinking about Vision, Capability, and Reach. RES is how I execute the V every single day.

What does your flight plan look like right now?
