I know how to I live how.
I’ve spent 38 years in sales. I’ve stood on stages. I’ve swum with SEALs and Special Operators through cold waters. I’ve looked out of a door over the Hudson River when time stood still on US Airways Flight 1549.
All of it taught me this: modeling is necessary. But it’s not enough.
Massive action is the bridge that turns someone else’s blueprint into your reality.
You don’t become a master simply by mimicking. You become a master by acting intentionally, consistently, and massively.
And you? You can move your model into mastery today.
1. Model → Mastery: the gap
Modeling means you find someone who’s done it.
You watch. You learn the patterns. You imitate the behaviors.
But there’s a gap. The gap between “I know how” and “I live how.”
This gap is where most people stall. They stop at modeling. They admire the hero, but they don’t do the work.
When I was learning leadership in sales and my time with Tony Robbins, I had mentors whose presence I studied. I tried to copy their cadence, their posture, their decisions under fire. But copying wasn’t enough.
The leap came when I lived the decisions under fire. I showed up when the alarm sounded, and I acted when the stakes hit zero.
That’s massive action.
2. What massive action looks like
Massive action is loud in the trenches. It’s early mornings. It’s extra hours. It’s saying yes before you feel ready.
It means you stop waiting for permission. You stop waiting for perfect. You pull the trigger.
Here’s what I used:
- I chose the role I wanted. I didn’t wait to be given the role.
- I broke down the behaviors of the model:- How do they think? How do they move? How do they respond when crisis hits?
- Then I acted like them anyway. While I was still learning. While I was still figuring it out.
In the sales world I was in, I didn’t say “I’ll model the master closer.” I said, “I will call five prospects before noon today. I will handle the rejection. I will deliver value even when the room is cold.”
That’s what moves modeling into mastery.
3. Lead with your future self
Imagine your future self: the one you’re modeling. The one who’s already accomplished what you’re chasing.
Now ask: What would they do today?
Do that.
When I looked at my future self, I saw: “I lead organizations. I speak globally. I mentor companies to scale.”
Then I asked: What would that me do this morning?
So I opened the email, made the video, and touched base with a leader. I behaved like the future version of me.
Repeat that. Step by step. Day by day. Massive action becomes the engine.
4. Framework: Model → Massive Action → Mastery
Here’s the step-by-step map I use:
- Observe the model.
Pick someone who’s done it. Watch how they operate. I watched what the top speakers did and do. I modeled what top athletes did and do to get to where they are. - Extract the critical moves.
What key behaviors matter? What decisions matter? This helped me decide what actions I needed to incorporate and build the habits. - Set micro-actions.
What’s the smallest massive action you can take today? What is my next best move? The same thing I did as I executed on the Miracle on the Hudson - Execute with ferocity.
Do the work when it’s uncomfortable. Do it when it’s inconvenient. You have to learn, as my special operators taught me, ” Embrace the Suck.” - Reflect and refine.
What worked? What failed? Adjust and keep moving forward. Take inventory of what worked and didn’t, and focus on progress.
When you repeat this loop, you stop being a copier of the model. You become a living version of mastery.
5. Why it matters for you
Modeling alone feels safe. You look like you’re making progress. You feel inspired.
But you don’t become.
Massive action closes the gap. It forces growth. It triggers self-efficacy — the belief you can succeed.
It also raises the thermostat of your capability. It changes your identity from “I’m learning” to “I’m doing.”
When I applied this after the Hudson event, after I exited my sales career, I discovered the future version of me didn’t wait. They locked in. They acted. They mastered.
6. Your move now
Pick your model. My first mentor showed me how to build my “kitchen cabinet,” and I used new tools to research each model’s story and how they became who they are.
Write one simple massive action you will take today that model would take. Use your Notes app and a habit tracker to reinforce the one action.
Do it.
Then tomorrow pick another. Then another.
Clarity is your compass. Courage is your stride. Conviction is your fuel.
You don’t get to mastery by wishing. You get there by doing.
When you move from “stopping at modeling” to “owning massive action,” you don’t just grow. You ascend.
Live the limitless life.
Start now.
