Moments Matter. Leaders Rise. Now it’s your turn.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from surviving the Miracle on the Hudson and walking with leaders through moments of crisis, it’s this: You’re always one decision away from a breakthrough.
But too often, we feel stuck. Not because we’re incapable, but because we haven’t made space for clarity. Without it, we stay tethered to fear, indecision, and the false safety of inaction.
That’s why I believe in this progression with everything in me:
Get Clarity. Get Free. Get Going.
It’s not just a phrase—it’s a pathway to purpose, resilience, and meaningful leadership.
Step 1: Get Clarity – The Power of Knowing Where You Stand
Before Flight 1549 ever took off, I had spent years immersed in leadership, sales, and personal development. But none of that could have mattered if I hadn’t first done the work to know who I was and what mattered most.
Clarity is the beginning of all progress.
“You can’t navigate a storm if you don’t know your position.”
So many people get caught in the swirl of circumstances. They react to life instead of designing it. Leaders drift when they stop defining.
Whether you’re running a business, leading a team, or trying to rebuild after loss or failure, clarity is where your comeback starts.
Ask yourself:
- What do I truly want?
- What am I tolerating that’s holding me back?
- Where am I out of alignment with my values?
Clarity isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about getting brutally honest about the questions you’re avoiding. Once you name your truth, the fog begins to lift.
Step 2: Get Free – Releasing the Weight that’s Holding You Down
Clarity opens the door. But freedom comes when you walk through it.
After the Hudson crash, I faced another challenge: the mental weight. The what-ifs, the survivor’s guilt, the pressure to make the moment “mean something.”
And yet, I discovered that freedom doesn’t come from forgetting your pain. It comes from reframing it.
In leadership, we often carry:
- The fear of failure
- The need for control
- The impostor syndrome that whispers we’re not enough
When you hold on to those beliefs, you don’t just stay stuck—you start shrinking. And leaders aren’t meant to shrink. They’re meant to serve, to rise, and to inspire others by their presence.
“Getting free is about releasing the lies you’ve believed about yourself and the limitations others have put on you.”
That means:
- Forgiving what happened
- Letting go of what no longer serves you
- And stepping into the strength you’ve built from every trial you’ve endured
Step 3: Get Going – Turning Purpose Into Motion
The first time I spoke publicly about surviving Flight 1549, I wasn’t sure I was ready. But I knew I couldn’t stay silent. Not because of what happened to me—but because of what could happen for others if I used my experience to serve.
Once you get clear and free, there’s only one thing left to do: move.
Getting going doesn’t mean sprinting in every direction. It means intentional action that aligns with your purpose.
- If you’re building a business, launch the product you’ve been sitting on.
- If you’ve been leading from the sidelines, speak up.
- If you’ve been waiting for the “perfect” time to pivot, stop. The perfect moment is the one you’re in.
“Courage isn’t about the absence of fear—it’s about choosing to move anyway, because what’s ahead is worth it.”
Momentum builds confidence. Small wins build capacity. And movement creates miracles.
When It All Comes Together
In my work with leaders and teams across the globe, I’ve seen this journey unfold in countless lives. From CEOs navigating uncertainty to everyday people who decide they’re done living small.
The moment everything changes is rarely dramatic. It’s often a quiet realization: “I’m ready.”
Ready to face the truth.
Ready to release the weight.
Ready to take the next step.
When you get clear, get free, and get going, you don’t just lead differently. You live differently.
A Final Thought: This Moment is Yours
You don’t have to survive a plane crash to wake up to your life.
You don’t need a tragedy to activate your leadership.
What you need to do is stop waiting.
“You’ll never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.”
So make this moment count. Make it the one where you:
- Get Clear on your mission.
- Get Free from the things holding you back.
- Get Going toward the future only you can lead.
Because when you do?
Others will follow. Not because you told them to, but because your life shows them what’s possible.
Moments Matter. Leaders Rise. Now it’s your turn.
