What I Learned About Growth After a 38-Year Sales Career

When I left my 38-year sales career, people asked me the same question again and again.

“How did you scale this next chapter so fast?”

My answer surprises many.
It wasn’t about grinding harder.
It wasn’t about adding more people.
It wasn’t about chasing every opportunity.

It was about getting clear on who I needed to become.

Because when you want to grow a business that matters, you first grow the person leading it.
And scaling a business is never separate from scaling yourself.

I learned that in the cold waters of the Hudson River.

When I stood on that wing of US Airways 1549, watching the skyline and waiting for rescue, a simple truth hit me.
You don’t rise to your goals.
You rise to your preparation.
You rise to your standards.
You rise to the behaviors you practice long before the crisis hits.

That moment never left me.
It became the foundation for how I built Resilience Partners.

Here’s what I learned.
Here’s what I put into action.

And here’s what you can do if you want to scale with clarity, courage, and conviction.

Model the Behavior You Want

The team will watch what you do long before they listen to what you say.

If you want excellence, you live excellence.
If you want ownership, you show ownership.
If you want consistency, you practice consistency in the days when no one is watching.

I realized early that I couldn’t ask my team to do anything I wasn’t willing to do first.

So I chose to:

  • Keep commitments without excuses
  • Do the hard things when they were easy to avoid
  • Tell the truth instead of the comfortable version of it
  • Lead with purpose, not pressure

People don’t follow titles.
People follow examples.

Live the Values You Say You Believe

The company says it has values.
Most companies put them on a wall.
The best companies put them in motion.

Our values at Resilience Partners are simple.

  • Be Calm in Chaos
  • Practice Service -First Leadership
  • Have Integrity with Compassion
  • Embrace Authentic Transformation
  • Embrace Clarity, Simplicity & Adaptability
  • Cultivate Connection and Relatedness
  • Practice Innovative Possibility
  • Live Faithful Responsibility
  • Bring Joyful Vitality

Those values guide every conversation, every hire, every decision.

And you know what happens when you live your values instead of talking about them?

People trust you.
People stay with you.
People grow with you, not in spite of you.

Grow People Before You Add People

of the biggest mistakes I see leaders make is adding people because they feel behind.

Growth doesn’t come from more bodies.
Growth comes from more capability.

I learned this in sales, and I relearned it when I started my company.

Before you bring in someone new, ask yourself:

“Have I grown the people I already have?”

Scaling isn’t about filling seats.
It’s about elevating strengths.
When you grow people, you build a team that thinks, acts, and leads at a higher level.

That’s how you scale.
From the inside out.

Give Your People the Green Light for Ambitious Feedback

changed everything for me.

I started telling my team,
“Don’t wait for permission. Tell me what you see.”

Ambitious feedback is honest, direct, and given with the goal of making things better.

Some leaders fear it.
I welcome it.

Because when your team tells you the truth, you evolve faster.
You make better calls.
You see blind spots before they become setbacks.

When you create a space where people feel safe enough to challenge you, you become a stronger leader.

And your company becomes stronger because of it.

Your Calendar Is the Most Powerful Tool You Have

It’s where the real shift happened for me.

I stopped letting my calendar run me.
I made the decision to run it.

My rule is simple.
Over 50 percent of my time goes to what I want, not what others want from me.

Half of my time is spent on:

  • Creating
  • Leading
  • Thinking
  • Connecting
  • Coaching
  • Building what matters most

Time is your greatest lever.
When you spend it with intention, results follow.

I learned this from the “time as a tool” model.
You don’t control time.
You work with it.

And when you put the right things on your calendar, your calendar becomes your competitive advantage.

Stay Close to Resourcefulness

It carried me through that day on the Hudson.
It carried me through my sales career.
And it carries me now as an entrepreneur.

When you don’t know the answer, you find it.
When you don’t have the perfect plan, you build the next step.
When you feel stuck, you ask a better question.

Resourcefulness is the discipline of finding a way instead of waiting for one.

Every leader who scales anything meaningful learns to stay close to it.

Scaling Is a Daily Decision

Many people think scaling happens in big leaps.
It doesn’t.

It happens in the small choices you make every day:

  • How you show up
  • How you lead
  • How you decide
  • How you invest your time
  • How you model your values
  • How you grow your people

Scaling my business wasn’t an event.
It was a shift in how I thought, acted, and lived.

You don’t get going by pushing harder.
You get going by aligning deeper.

And when you lead with clarity, courage, conviction, and resourcefulness, something powerful happens.

You don’t just scale your business.

You scale your life.

This is the work I love.
And it’s the work I’ve been digging into with a small group of high-intent professionals who want to rise to their next level with more certainty, more direction, and more confidence.

I’m calling it the Sales Resiliency Mastermind.

It’s where we take the principles I’ve lived on the plane, in the river, in sales leadership, and throughout my career—and turn them into a repeatable path for people who want to lead with clarity and conviction.

Not a course.
Not a quick fix.
A real environment for growth.

I’m not opening it wide.
Just offering space for the right people who want to develop the mindset and skill set that today’s selling environment demands.
