Why a Strong Foundation Still Fails Without Fuel
Most leaders I meet have done the work.
They built the plan. They have the framework. They know the steps.
And they’re stuck.
Here’s why.
A foundation is not momentum. A framework is not fuel. Structure without energy is just an expensive place to park the plane.
I learned this at 3,000 feet above the Hudson River.
We had a plane. We had a pilot. We had procedures. But when both engines went out, none of that mattered until someone decided to act. Captain Sullenberger didn’t just have a framework for emergency landings. He had fuel — purpose, identity, accountability, and the will to move.
Captain Sullenberger didn’t just rely on a checklist for emergency landings. He had fuel. He had a deep sense of purpose, a clear identity, unwavering accountability, and the absolute will to move
And sitting in seat 15A, I realized we needed that same fuel in the cabin. Up to that day, my identity was defined by my 30-year career as a top-producing tech sales executive. I was a guy who managed pipelines, hit quotas, and valued systems. But as the cabin filled with smoke and water, the “sales manager” identity vanished. My core values—faith, service, and a deep sense of obligation to others—took over. When the doors opened, my purpose wasn’t just to get out; it was to ensure the people around me got out first.
That is when accountability became real. I chose to stay behind, helping others onto the seats and into the rafts, eventually becoming the last passenger out of that plane’s cabin. I didn’t have a manual on how to manage a sinking airliner in freezing water, but I had the will to act.
That is the exact dividing line between simply surviving a crisis and performing through it.
That’s the difference between surviving and performing.
In my Resilience Framework, four fuel sources turn structure into momentum:
Purpose. Know why the outcome matters before the pressure hits. Not during. Before.
Action. Movement is fuel. The moment you stop moving, the framework freezes.
Accountability. Other people are combustion. Who’s counting on you?
Identity. Under pressure, you perform who you decided to be. Not who you hope to be. Who you decided to be.
But here’s what most people miss.
Fuel without reach only gets you so far.
That’s where the VCR framework I learned from Chad Jenkins comes in. Vision tells you where you’re going. Capability tells you what you can carry. Reach determines how far the engine actually runs.
And Reach doesn’t expand through grinding. It expands through Affinity.
The right relationships don’t just open doors. They collapse distance. They get you where you need to go faster than any linear path could take you.
Build the foundation. Fuel the engine. Then extend the reach.
Because a well-fueled engine with no road is still just a very impressive place to park the plane.
What’s fueling your resilience right now?
