Why Frameworks Fail: The Miracle on the Hudson Lesson on Business Momentum

Most leaders I meet have done the work.

They built the plan. They have the framework. They know the steps.

And they’re still stuck.

Here’s why.

A foundation is not momentum.
A framework is not fuel.
Structure without energy is just an expensive place to park the plane.

You can have the systems.
You can have the playbook.
You can have the strategy deck, KPIs, org chart, and process map.

But if there is no fuel behind it, no real purpose, no clear identity, no accountability, no willingness to move when the pressure hits, then what you built becomes maintenance, not momentum.

I learned this at 3,000 feet above the Hudson River.

We had a plane. We had a pilot. We had procedures.

But when both engines went out, none of that mattered until someone decided to act.

Captain Sullenberger didn’t just have a framework for emergency landings. He had fuel, purpose, identity, accountability, and the will to move.

That’s the difference between surviving and performing.

And sitting in seat 15A, I realized we needed that same fuel in the cabin.

Up to that day, my identity was defined by my 30-year career as a top-producing tech sales executive. I was a guy who managed pipelines, hit quotas, and valued systems. But as the cabin filled with smoke and water, the “sales manager” identity vanished.

What took over were my core values.

Faith.
Service.
A deep sense of obligation to others.

When the doors opened, my purpose wasn’t just to get out. It was to make sure the people around me got out first.

That is when accountability became real.

I chose to stay behind, helping others onto the seats and into the rafts, eventually becoming the last passenger out of that plane’s cabin. I did not have a manual for how to manage a sinking airliner in freezing water, but I had the will to move.

That is the dividing line between simply surviving a crisis and performing through it.

And that is the same dividing line I see in business every day.

A lot of companies have structure.
Very few have fuel.

They have meetings, but no movement.
They have strategy, but no urgency.
They have talent, but no shared mission.
They have a foundation, but no engine.

That is why they plateau.

Not because they are lazy.
Not because they are broken.
Not because they are missing another framework.

They plateau because what once gave them traction is no longer giving them thrust.

That is why I say this all the time.

It’s not the big moments that define you. It’s the moments inside the moment.

Every crisis is a sequence of decisions. Miss one, and the whole thing starts to unravel.
Catch one, and you can change the outcome for yourself and everyone around you.

That is what my A.S.S.E.S.S. framework is built for.

Acknowledge Reality
Don’t lie to yourself about what’s happening.

Scan for Options
There are always more than you think.

Select the Best Available
Not the perfect one. The best one you have right now.

Execute Without Hesitation
Decision without execution is just a thought.

Support Others
Leadership under pressure is never about you alone.

Stay Calm
Calm is not the absence of pressure. It is the decision to lead anyway.

Six moments. Six decisions. One outcome.

That is true in a crisis. And it is true in a company that has stalled.

Because most plateaus are not caused by lack of knowledge.

They are caused by hesitation. By drift. By misalignment. By leaders waiting too long to make the decision that the moment is demanding.

And there is another layer to it. Reach does not expand through grinding alone.

It expands through Affinity. And that is why I teach my Access to Influence framework alongside my A.S.S.E.S.S framework.

The right relationships collapse time.
They shorten the distance between where you are and where you need to go.
They open doors faster than effort alone ever will.

That means if you want momentum, you need more than a better system.

You need:

  • the right fuel
  • the right people
  • the right decisions
  • the right identity to carry the weight of the moment

Build the foundation.

Fuel the engine.

Make the decisions that matter.

Because your destiny is not shaped by the big moments.

It is shaped in them.

What decision are you making right now that your future self will thank you for?
